Lobethal Bohemian Philsner

Hurr hurr, Philsner.

More importantly though it's both the first beer at what I'm told is an Adelaide institution The Wheatsheaf, and the first tap beer from Lobethal Bierhaus, part of what is an increasingly endangered species of Adelaide breweries.

Additionally, it's pretty good for a Pilsner and slid down very nicely after the 4.5km walk to get to this place. Good looking beer, pretty nondescript nose but a good bite first up then clean finish. Pilsner.

Holgate Pilsner

Sometimes, a light refreshing pilsner is just what you want - but so often the experience can be derailed by stray off notes that can counterintuitively make drinking this supposedly easy drinking style a bit of mission.

This example from Holgate stays with the tried and true Saaz Czech hops and pilsner malting with no evident additives. It pours beautifully and immediate impressions are it is a very light and crystal clear attempt with a snowy white cap that develops and persists atop string but not intrusive aeration.

Taste wise these beers are never going to write a novel, and while it seems odd to judge a beer on what it doesn't do, the fact this drop is so completely unoffensive is probably its single greatest asset.

It's a highly drinkable, faithful recreation of the style and to my palate, a far cleaner effort than many others on the market. CoughawardwinningTrumerPilscough. 6.5

Trumer Pils

Pilsner! German Pilsner.

In fact, it's a slight surprise this was up first at a craft beer event (very good event overall it must be said, nice work Wayside Inn, food was excellent).

What to say about this. Well, it went well with the yellowfin (better than Ballast would I'm guessing). It's from Salzburg, and a WBC winner apparently. It's true to style and comes through with very little malt with a slightly crisp euro aftertaste. Finish is clean and refreshing.

All of which is fine.. it's just not a beer (or a style?) I particularly enjoy to be honest. 5.0

Kozel Premium

Kozel. But the goat this time cradles a lighter beer..

First mouthful I thought this was pretty alright. Then it just got worse, and worse, and looking back it's dropped from a very respectable score to an absolute belting in short time.

I could go into it but let's just say such is the fate of typical euro lager. 1.0
